2014 En Primeur – Chateau Canon La Gaffelière

Chateau Canon La Gaffelière is located just outside the medieval town of Saint-Emilion. The vineyards of the estate are located at the foot of a south-facing slope and span 19.5 hectares . The soil is a mixture of clay-limestone and clay-sand, which contributes to the complexity of the estate’s terroir.

The plantings of the chateau are divided as 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is quite atypical of the Saint Emilion appellation, but the varietals have been adapted to the estate’s specific terroir. The Cabernet Franc is especially suited to this type of heat-retaining soil, and it brings many floral and spicy notes to the wine.  The Merlot contributes roundness and balance, while the Cabernet Sauvignon provides power and aromatic complexity. The wines of Chateau Canon La Gaffelière are known for their complexity, purity and elegance.

Throughout the cool, wet conditions of the spring and summer of 2014, the berries began to ripen slowly. This initial slow ripening ensured the flavours of the berries were well preserved. However, there were concerns over the health of the grapes as colder, wet conditions persisted throughout the summer.  Though towards the end of August, the weather changed, and beautiful warm and dry conditions arrived in Bordeaux.  The ample sunshine enabled the grapes to ripen fully, and the harvest commenced when the berries achieved perfect maturity.
