Family property for over a century, the estate René Bouvier was created in 1910 by the grandfather of the current owner, Bernard Bouvier. Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy, Bernard Bouvier is one of those winemakers who have brought new ideas to the wine region and improved the image of Burgundy which has evolved for several years towards finesse. The Domaine René Bouvier is a Must Have for all lovers of Burgundy, it is constantly being quoted by the most important critics.
A family history
Founded in the early XIXth century, the estate is the result of the precise work of René Bouvier, grandfather of the current owner: Bernard Bouvier, who runs the winery with his wife since 1992. In a few years, the owner knew how to develop the winery but especially this notion of his terroir which is dear to him, brings a new breath to the terroir of Côte de Nuits and more particularly to the less famous appellations such as Marsannay or Fixin. The grandson of the founder wants to emphasize the different parcel wines.
“I explore the characteristics of the different climats (Marsannay, Champ Salomon in Ouzelay, Clos du Roy, Longeroies, La Morisotte) to understand the diversity of the vineyards and to cultivate them differently.” Bernard Bouvier
A vast and diversified vineyard
The winegrower owns 13 hectares of vines planted with Pinot Noir grapes and 4 with Chardonnay, a vineyard therefore predominantly red. The vineyards cover 18 appellations in Burgundy, Côte-de-Nuits-Villages, Fixin, Marsannay and Gevrey-Chambertin and its finest sites (grand crus, premiers crus, villages and regional appellations). In the pursuit of highest quality, the winemaker has chosen to cultivate his vineyards in a sustainable way with a selection of the best clones, ploughing, reducing the buds, green and manual harvest. Since 2013 Bernard Bouvier and his wife are converting all of the vines to organic farming, certified by Ecocert.
The estate vinifies with modern cellar tools. In 2006, a new wine cellar of 1200m² was inaugurated and allows the optimization of aging and bottling. The care given to the winemaking and aging process, makes the winery a sure value of Burgundy. Far from marketing, the winegrower prefers to evoke the expression of vintages and terroirs while rejecting a certain standardization of wines. It is this quest for quality combined with respect for the terroir that contributes to the fame of Domaine René Bouvier: round and powerful wines with perfectly tamed tannins.
