Guigal: A family domain situated in the heart of the Cote-Rotie
The Domain E. Guigal has a rich, strong history in spite of its “short” 70 years of existence. Etienne Guigal arrived at the age of 14 in the Cote-Rotie in 1924. In 1946 he founded his own domain in Ampuis, where vines have been cultivated for over 2400 years. Due to blindness, he quickly turned over management of the domain to his son, Marcel Guigal, in 1961. The establishment is still family-owned, even Phillippe Guigal, son of the owners, has become the oenologue of the property.
The family Guigal purchased Chateau Ampuis, as a means to anchor Domain Guigal in the viticultural scene of the Cote-Rotie and to optimize the diversity of its wine production. In 2001, the property acquired Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat in the Sant-Joseph and Hermitage appellation. They also attained Domaine Vallouit in Cote-Rotie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.
Mythical vintages in the best appellations of the Rhone Valley
Today, the diversification is so grand that the domain is present in all of Rhone Valley, with parcels situated in the Northern most appellations like Condrieu, Cote-Rotie, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, in addition to those in the South with Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Tavel. The different wines benefit from rich land, and the most pure representation of the region. These are all vinified and stored in the cellars of the Domain in Ampuis. The wine cultivation is done with total respect for the environment and a battle against the diverse parasites and diseases that could harm the grapes.
Among some of the wines produced by E; Guigal, which extend over a total of 60 hectares, the domain owes a lot of its fame to its cuvées which are known world-wide. The mythical cuvées from Cote-Rotie such as “La Mouline”, “La Turque”, “La Landonne” and “Chateau D’Ampuis”, created from the oldest parcels of land. “La Doriane” is known thanks to the Condrieu appellation, “Ex-Voto” is found in Hermitage, and “Lieu-Dit” and “Vignes de l’Hospice” are from Saint-Joseph.
3 magnificent wines from E. Guigal
Cote-Rotie “Chateau d’Ampuis” 2012
A splendidly dark red colour, this wine from Cote-Rotie develops aromas of spices, black fruits and light hints of wood. In the mouth, we can notice dense, racy tannins which have been softened thanks to the wood. Chateau Ampuis is well-structure, powerful and concentrated, that has flavours of prunes, blackberries, and vanilla.
Cotes du Rhone Red 2013
Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone 2013 has a rather dark red colour that is bright. Fragrances of red fruit and spices are distinct. On the palate the wine is ample, full, and racy. The tannins are coated but extremely well presented and round. Splendid persistence, tying together elegance, finesse and equilibrium.
Ermitage “ExVoto” Red 2012
With a ruby red colour, Guigal’s “Ex-Voto” develops powerful aromas of black fruits, leather, liquorice, oriental spices and hints of eucalyptus. The wine proves it richness and structure in mouth, revealing powerful and elegant tannins. Intense, thick and concentrated it offers excellent guarding potential.
