Primeurs 2016 | Chateau Leoville Las Cases, one of the oldest estates in the Medoc unveils its 2016 vintage

Considered one of the oldest estates of the region and after four decades, Chateau Leoville Las Cases is the most consistent of the Medoc grands crus classe.

A story dating back to the XVII century

The Leoville estate belonged to some of the most influential noble families of France before its acquisition by the Las Cases. The estate was split between 1826 and 1840 as a result of the French Revolution, a division that gave rise to the three Leoville estates that we know today: Leoville Las Cases, Barton and Poyferré.

Léoville Las Cases represents 60% and is the true heart of the ancient domain. The château was purchased from Jean Las Cases in 1900 by a certain Theophile Skawinski, great-great-grandfather of the current owner: Jean-Hubert Delon.

An exceptional and unclassifiable terroir

Located in the Saint-Julien appellation, Le Clos Leoville Las Cases boasts a terroir of great complexity. With its 98 hectares covered in vines, it represents the largest of the three Léoville estates. Consisting mainly of Quaternary gravel upon sandy gravel and gravelly clay subsoils, it is sometimes possible to encounter clays that are more or less deep and compact. This diversity of soils is due in particular to the proximity of the Gironde, and is a result of successive layering over geological periods. The river creates a very special microclimate that allows the early maturity of grapes and also protects the vineyard from the negative effects of extreme climates, especially from frost. This array of unique geological features has great influence on the development of the vine and the formation of the grapes. Water supply is more consistent but limited. Low nutritional intake favours the expression of Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs, which always reach their full potential. This exceptional and incomparable terroir endows the great wine of Léoville Las Cases with a unique personality.

The remarkable character of Leoville Las Cases can be attributed to its exceptional terroir, specifically to the 55-hectares plot called “l’Enclos,” exclusively dedicated to great wine. There are eight different expressions of the terroir. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates (66%), followed by Merlot (24%), Cabernet Franc (9%) and Petit Verdot (1%).

Remarkable Wines

The Chateau Leoville Las Cases, apart from its Grand Vin de Leoville, also produces Le Clos du Marquis and Le Petit Lion.

Le Clos du Marquis was created in 1902 and comes from the great terroirs of the Saint-Julien appellation, which were not part of the original land register of the former Domaine de Léoville. This wine perfectly expresses the character of its appellation: structure, complexity, harmony, distinction and exceptional cellaring potential.

Le Petit Lion was based on the same philosophy as its two elders, it is vinified and bred to preserve a fresh and ripe fruit flavour throughout its evolution. This second wine of easier access and earlier drinkability, reveals an important presence of the Merlot variety.

Le Grand Vin de Leoville is a wine born from exceptional terroirs in the register of the former Domaine de Leoville. These terroirs are mainly located in Le Clos de Leoville Las Cases, at the exit towards Pauillac of the village of Saint-Julien. Le Grand Vin de Léoville reveals a complex and mature expression from the Cabernets that impart a character of their own, universally recognized for a very long time.
