The prestigious Dom Perignon House has recently announced the release of its 2009 vintage, an iconic cuvee marking the end of a very successful decade in Champagne. This vintage, which achieves perfect maturity and balance, seemed to demand attention throughout its conception.
The Dom Perignon Vintage 2009 : A Year of Extreme Conditions
Produced exclusively in the best years, the Dom Perignon Vintage is a truly representative and iconic cuvee of this legendary Champagne House. It was not always obvious that 2009 would be such a successful vintage. The harvest season can be compared to that of 2003, which was marked by episodes of severe frost and intense heat. Faced with the difficult choices presented by such extreme changes in climate, Cellar Master Richard Geoffroy nevertheless succeeded in assembling an exceptional cuvee, one characterised by a rare intensity.
In 2009, just as in 2003, it was crucial to make the right decisions especially when selecting the date of the harvest, based on when the grapes would reach their finest stage of ripeness. The 2009 season began with a harsh winter followed by a particularly mild, rainy spring, which resulted in significant pressure from mildew during the flowering stage. Later, the heavy storms of July led many to expect the worst and put the vines at risk on a sanitary level. Fortune favoured the vines during the month of August, whose warm temperatures created the ideal environment for the fruit to achieve optimal ripeness. Although a short hail storm on September 4th posed difficulties, the grapes were successfully harvested on September 12th. The cuvee elaborated from this high quality fruit clearly expresses not only the soil and grape varietals but also the unique climatic conditions of the season, as well as the creativity and talent of the cellar master.
Focus on the Dom Perignon Vintage 2009
The Dom Perignon Vintage 2009 is a clear expression of the marriage between nature and savoir-faire, perfected over the 350 years of history marking the prestigious Champagne House. Nature has presented the house with perfectly mature fruit, balanced with a nice acidity that gives the wine a great freshness and plenty of energy. The carefully assembled cuvee blends Chardonnay with Pinot Noir, resulting in very fruity bouquet of primary aromas (notably, guava, spicy green grapefruit zest and stone fruits like white peaches and nectarines). Swirling this wine reveals notes of woody vanilla and toasted brioche, still warm from the oven. Ripe, fleshy fruit emerges on the palate. Intense, voluptuous and boasting a great richesse, the Dom Perignon Vintage 2009 shows off a certain power, nevertheless beautifully restrained. This wine offers a mouthfeel of impressive depth, with a silky, saline, sappy side complemented by splendid iodised touches. The finish provides complete satisfaction with remarkable length and persistence.
